Treatment options

Hot flashes may be bothersome enough to bring you to your doctor's office to discuss the treatment options available. Some of the most common and effective treatment options for hot flashes are listed below. Consult further with your health care professional to decide which treatment option is right for you.

Estrogen therapy

Estrogen therapy is one of the most effective treatments for relieving hot flashes. Estrogen therapy alone (called ET) may be used in women who do not have a uterus, while estrogen/progestin combination therapy (EPT) is recommended for women with an intact uterus. ET and EPT together are commonly referred to as hormone therapy (HT). ET and EPT are FDA-approved medications for the treatment of hot flashes, and other treatments are sometimes offered to women who cannot take them.

Hormone therapy

Hormone therapy (HT) is one of the most effective treatments for moderate to severe hot flashes.

While you may notice some reduction in hot flashes during the first several weeks after starting HT, it can take 3-6 weeks or more for the full effect to occur.

Hormone therapy may be effective in treating the symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. If you're experiencing the symptoms of vaginal atrophy or are at risk for developing osteoporosis, you may want to talk to your doctor about the type of therapy that is right for you.

Novo Nordisk offers a medication with two dosing options that may help treat hot flashes. ACTIVELLA® is a hormone therapy that supplements the estrogen your body loses during menopause with the same type of estrogen it produced naturally.
